Queen Margaret University students: no excuse now for missing your bus
November 14, 2007
The new Grant Management sponsored internet cafe at Queen Margaret University in Musselburgh was covered by the Edinburgh Evening News last night.
The newspaper also mentions the electronic bus time system we are installing. This will let students at the campus near Edinburgh know when their bus is about to arrive and how much time they have left to finish their donuts, I mean, their class assignments.
The article continues:
The new £105 million eco-campus near Musselburgh has the lowest carbon footprint of any UK campus, and includes a biomass heating system, fuelled by wood-chip, and more than 26,000 new trees and hedgerows.
Grant Management’s sponsorship deal with the new-look QMU has also seen the company itself go carbon neutral.
Chief executive Peter Grant said: “Helping the planet is a big issue for the students and young professionals who form the bulk of our tenants, so it also has to be a big issue for us as a business.
“By going carbon neutral we’re offering students the choice to live in a more sustainable way.”
And by installing the electronic bus time system at Queen Margaret University, we’re also offering them the chance to get back to their student accommodation in time for tea.
Spotted! Edinburgh blogger eyeballs our new carbon neutral letting signs
November 12, 2007
Remember we mentioned the new Grant Management carbon neutral to let signs a few days ago? Well let’s hear it for one of Edinburgh’s most environmentally conscious bloggers who spotted our sign on a property on Leith Walk and was inspired enough to write a post about carbon neutral letting. His blog is called Suitably Despairing and he is committed to highlighting environment issues. He certainly has positive things to say about our stance on carbon neutrality:
They’re called Grant Management, and seem to have their head screwed on about the environment. They offer their staff fresh fruit and fair-trade tea and coffee, and a bicycle allowance if they cycle to work. All their properties are fitted out with energy saving appliances and CFLs, and the tenants are informed of the local recycling schemes.
He goes on to mention Global Trees and the campaign to offset carbon emissions. He concludes:
It’s unusual to find a mainstream company so overwhelmingly embrace a green ethos, but it should definitely be encouraged which is why I’m highlighting them.
We really appreciate it, thanks and keep looking out for those signs!
Design a mural for Queen Maragaret University: win £1000!
November 7, 2007
The writing is on the wall for students at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. You may remember Queen Margaret recently opened an environmentally friendly new campus at Musselburgh and to celebrate, Grant Management is running a competition for students to design a mural for the university’s internet cafe.
As all of Grant Management’s student accommodation and properties to let are 100% carbon neutral, you won’t be surprised to know the theme of the design is carbon neutral living.
You don’t have to paint the wall yourself - Grant Management will do that for you as part of its Queen Margaret University sponsorship. Just get creative in the medium of your choice, and to any scale, and submit your ideas, marked “QMU Mural competition” with your name, matriculation number and contact details to Grant Management, 14 Coates Crescent, Edinburgh, EH3 7AF before 31 January 2008.
Never mind the student union, win the £1000 first prize and you could afford to paint the whole town red.
Watch out, Beetles about
October 31, 2007
Our drive to ensure all our properties are 100% carbon neutral also applies to their administration. That means we offset the carbon emissions for our fleet of support cars.
On that subject, look out for a posse of brand new Grant Management Beetles buzzing around town. Currently they can be spotted in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Dundee, Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Nottingham and sunny Bristol. And no, we don’t usually park them like that.
Blog Action Day and our pledge on Carbon Neutral properties
October 15, 2007
Today is Blog Action Day and bloggers throughout the world are marking it with posts highlighting the desperate need to take action now to protect the planet.
We fully support this. As you know, all our properties are 100% carbon neutral and to underline our position, Peter Grant has written a special Carbon Neutral section for this site, explaining why the company has taken this stance and about his plans for the future.
Our aim now is to plant many millions of trees all around the world. Global Trees is now helping others – both individuals and businesses - to go neutral. Calculate your footprint and take the first steps at Global Trees and Go Neutral Please help us by spreading the word about going neutral and planting trees.
Extra: I am glad to say this blog is also hosted by a 100% carbon neutral company which offsets all of its carbon emissions including the impact of its server centres.
Fun at Scotcampus Freshers’ Festival
September 28, 2007
Coming to you live from Glasgow’s SECC! Well, almost.
Furrukh, Elizabeth and Laura have just spent the day on our stand at Scotcampus Freshers’ Festival in Glasgow.

Many of the people who stopped by to see us were new students and we expected them to be interested in sharing flats or houses with lots of their friends. Four or five in a flat at least. But, no. Interestingly most enquiries were about flats for rent in Glasgow for just two people. Quite unexpected, but we were still able to give them what they wanted.
For those, who didn’t want student accommodation - well, we were able to direct them to the Dominos Pizza stand further on, who seemed to be happy to meet their needs.
The most inciteful questions during the day were usually about the practicalities of how we ensure our properties are 100% carbon neutral - and that’s something we will cover in more detail here as this blog matures.
